These are the areas of research and specialisation:

• In the area of literature, the research focus on transcultural dimensions will entail the dialogue and exchange between the disciplines of English and Anglo-American Studies, Arabic Studies, German Studies, Spanish and Spanish-American Studies, Italian Studies, and Russian Studies. The disciplines of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory will provide the methodological framework for this interaction, with particular attention to postcolonial and gender issues. Additional lines of research will include the intersection between literature and other cultural expressions such as law, medicine, the visual arts, drama, cinema, music, dance, television and streaming platforms.
• In the areas of linguistics, interpreting and translation, the languages included in the programme are Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The research areas are quite diverse, ranging from textual perspectives (both in their inter- and intra-linguistic dimensions, and with both synchronic and diachronic approaches) to those relating to the practices and role of interpreters and translators. Notably, the last few years have seen the emergence of innovative lines of research in inclusive communication in the broadest sense, as well as in the application of new technologies (e.g. AI and LLMs, Computer-Assisted Interpreting, etc.).

The University of Trieste boasts a strong scholarly tradition in the areas of literature, linguistics, interpreting, and translation.

While drawing on this tradition, the TRANS-LLIT Doctoral Programme also welcomes the most recent developments in research. 

The focus is on two main areas, transcultural and transmedia studies, inasmuch as they provide a space for dialogue and exchange for the various disciplines included in the programme: 

• transcultural studies, because the dialogue between cultures is integral to translation and interpreting, and essential to the study of literature and linguistics.
• transmedia studies, because the fruitful interaction between different cultural and media discourses typical of the contemporary landscape is the key to a full understanding of the past.

While exploring these two areas, PhD candidates will acquire the specific analytical and investigative skills with which to interpret the past and thus comprehend the present and the future.

While pursuing your PhD degree, you will learn

• how to identify innovative research issues pertaining to the cultural areas of literature, linguistics, interpreting, and translation;
• how to master the analytical tools, ranging from the most traditional to the most advanced, that are employed in the curricular disciplines;
• how to conduct a specific research project founded on an up-to-date international bibliography as well as on the selection and implementation of pertinent methodologies;
• how to put together and present your research project and results in accordance to international standards;

In addition, you will learn

• how to work in a group and in multicultural contexts
• how to manage a project
• how to disseminate and share your research findings

Thanks to the transcultural and transmedia skills acquired during your PhD, you will be qualified to work at a high level in the following contexts:
