PhD Programme

The profound transformations taking place in contemporary society, particularly the digital and environmental transitions, are broadening the scope of traditional legal research.

The research activities within the PhD programme are highly multidisciplinary and international, considering digital and environmental transitions.

In private law, for instance, contracts in European law are particularly important, as they involve private law, European Union law, international law and commercial law. Similarly, labour law focuses on contracts, with aspects emerging that extend beyond the legal sphere, such as those relating to corporate organisation.

In public law, particular attention is paid to the internationalisation and Europeanisation of criminal law processes. Another area of focus is the regulation of the rights of foreign nationals across a wide range of relevant sectors. Anti-discrimination law is notably multidisciplinary in nature. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the analysis of the concept of legitimate interest is also central. Interdisciplinarity is also a cornerstone of civil procedure, particularly with regard to the circulation of evidence in judicial proceedings. The in-depth study of European criminal justice is equally significant, particularly in relation to forms of law enforcement cooperation aimed at combating crime.
Visiting lecturers from abroad also deliver seminars with the aim of promoting the internationalisation of the doctoral programme in terms of research.

The Course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in legal research and analysis, focusing on interdisciplinarity within and beyond the field of law.

Teaching activities are spread over three years.

  • First year: Sources and methods for interdisciplinary legal research.
  • Second year: Legal developments and interdisciplinary methodology.
  • Third year: Social transitions and tools for interdisciplinary legal research.

Design workshops are provided at the end of each year to meet the need for active involvement, offering simulated experiences of analysing funding calls and preparing project proposals.

The PhD programme explores substantive and remedial aspects particularly suited to the multidisciplinary study of law. Areas of investigation will include forms of government, fundamental human rights, prohibitions on discrimination, the protection of personal data, torts and liability, procedural models, employment and industrial relations, company law, contractual relationships, administrative organisation and activity, criminal law, the protection of collective legal interests, the relationship between tax authorities and taxpayers, and civil and criminal procedural rules. These topics will be examined from a cross-disciplinary perspective, incorporating the methodological contributions of various scientific and disciplinary fields, ranging from historical-legal studies (including those within the Roman law tradition) and philosophy to the general theory of law and the diverse forms of legal pluralism encompassed by European Union law, international law, and comparative private law.

The PhD programme's training is geared towards the following main career paths: scientific and academic careers in public and private universities and research bodies; the ordinary judiciary and specialised judicial bodies; the legal profession, the State Legal Service and the notarial profession; senior management and highly specialised positions within public administration; high-responsibility roles in international organisations, banking institutions and financial intermediation bodies; management positions in companies and businesses; and legal consultancy within companies and corporate groups, particularly focusing on international contractual relations. Specialist consultancy is also available in the fields of competition law, market regulation and employment law.
