The programme promotes and integrates multi-scale approaches, linking processes across diverse levels of biological organization, from genomes to ecosystems, comprising the molecular and physiological responses of organisms. Research combines experimental, analytical and modelling approaches, with strong emphasis on quantitative analysis and the integration of complex multidisciplinary datasets, which can include experimental, genetic or observational data obtained through advanced technologies for ecosystem monitoring. Research activities also contribute to the development of scientific knowledge supporting evidence-based decision-making and environmental policies, with particular focus on ecosystem conservation and restoration under global change. Activities combine theoretical training, research through experimental, analytical and modelling approaches. The programme features highly personalised research pathways developed within an interdisciplinary and international contest, granting access to scientific collaboration networks and advanced research infrastructures. The competences acquired support qualified career placement in universities, research institutions, environmental agencies and territorial/environmental management bodies. Additional opportunities include environmental consultancy, the bioeconomy, monitoring and sustainable resource management, as well as technology transfer and scientific communication. Programme objectives The training objectives focus on developing advanced competences in understanding and analysing the biological, ecological and evolutionary processes underpinning biodiversity patterns and adaptive responses. The programme integrates a strong theoretical foundation with methodological and analytical skills, enabling the independent design and implementation of high-level research activities. Training includes the consolidation of advanced knowledge and the use of quantitative tools, as well as experimental and modelling approaches. In parallel, the individual research project is progressively defined through critical assessment of the scientific literature and the identification of innovative methodologies. The programme also promotes the development of transferable skills in scientific communication, research design and management, and the valorisation of research outcomes, in alignment with European priorities on biodiversity, climate change and sustainability. Career opportunities The programme develops high-level profiles with advanced scientific expertise for careers in research and higher education in international contexts. Graduates are prepared for roles in universities, research institutions, environmental agencies and public and private bodies involved in environmental protection, planning and management. The programme develops expertise to address complex challenges, including climate change impacts on marine and terrestrial ecosystems, the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning and services, the effects of anthropogenic pressures and pollutants, and the analysis of safety and risks associated with the environment and its contaminants. Graduates are also equipped to work in environmental consultancy, the bioeconomy, monitoring and sustainable resource management, contributing to evidence-based solutions aligned with European priorities on biodiversity, climate change adaptation and ecological transition.
