The University of Trieste embraces a forward-thinking and inclusive understanding of individual identity, in accordance with the principles outlined in its Statute. The University recognises the inherent value and diversity of each person as a means of enriching the wider community. In this spirit, and with full respect for individual dignity, students and staff may request to be addressed by their chosen name, rather than their legal name, within the University and in all academic and administrative contexts.

Members of the University community – including students, academic staff, researchers and administrative personnel – who experience a discrepancy between the gender assigned at birth and their lived gender identity and who have adopted a name that differs from their legally registered name may apply to use their chosen name on a provisional basis, pending the formal amendment of their official documents.

Registering your chosen name

To register your chosen name (carriera alias), the point of contact is the designated administrative officer who will treat your request confidentially. Follow these steps:

  1. Carefully read the Regulation
  2. Fill in and submit the relevant application form to the designated administrative officer:
    • Annex A1 – Students
    • Annex A2 – Technical and administrative staff, library staff and language assistants (CEL)
    • Annex A3 – Teaching staff and research assistants

If your legal documentation is updated while you are enrolled at the University, you may submit your new identity document directly to the designated administrative officer to ensure prompt amendment of your records.

Some individuals may request to change their name for personal safety reasons (such as protected witnesses or collaborators with the justice system). In such cases, the same procedure and annexes apply, as stipulated in Article 8 of the Regulation.
