Laboratory Integrated Design of Architecture and the Built Environment
RRR Lab - Final Workshop
Single-Cycle Degree Course in Architecture
Department of Engineering and Architecture - a.y. 2024-2025
Municipality of Cavazzo Carnico

From 26 to 31 May 2025, the Architectural and Landscape Design Workshop “Visioni per il Lago di Cavazzo” (Visions for Cavazzo Lake), curated by Thomas Bisiani, Luigi Di Dato, Michela Lupieri and Adriano Venudo, will take place in Cavazzo Carnico, Cescalns.

During the Workshop's work and project week, which will end with a presentation and discussion open to the public, there will be events open to the public (readings on the lake), meetings with citizens, associations and technicians, inspections and guided tours of the architecture and landscapes of the lake.

Finally, the public presentation and awarding of the projects will take place on 3 July 2025.

The workshop ‘Visions for Cavazzo Lake’ is an intensive design experience involving the students of the Integrated Architecture and Built Environment Design Laboratory of the Degree Course in Architecture of the University of Trieste. The activity will take place entirely in the field, over the course of a week-long residency in Cesclans (Cavazzo Carnico), and aims at the architectural, landscape and cultural enhancement of the largest natural lake basin in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The transversal and generative theme of the workshop is the design of a public ‘park’ on the north shore of the lake, conceived as an ecological, social and cultural infrastructure capable of activating new relations between territory and community. Around this core, eight design devices are articulated, each dedicated to a key theme of the architecture, landscape and history of the lake: water, shores, paths, light architecture, ruins, ridges, historical traces, motorway infrastructure, tourist architecture and the mountain-lacustrine system. Devices and systems oriented to build new relationships between space, inhabitants, uses and narrative of the territory.

A key element of the workshop is the integration of architecture, landscape and environmental art, through a transdisciplinary approach that will include site-specific, installation and narrative practices. Each project will be called upon to develop, in parallel to the architectural, morphological and functional aspects, a reflection on the critical role of art in constructing imaginaries, activating public space and re-signifying places.

The work takes place in thematic workshops and site visits, with moments of reading the landscape and the architecture that characterises it, exploring, listening and relating to the context. The activities include guided tours and exploratory itineraries not only along the shores and the lake environment, but also in the wider Carnia region, with particular attention to the historical parish churches, villages, relevant architecture and cultural landscapes adjacent to the lake.

The final objective is to produce a coherent set of projects, in the form of visions, which can be integrated with each other, capable of orienting transformation and valorisation scenarios for the Cavazzo Lake, in synergy with the current territorial Masterplan. The workshop is proposed as a didactic and experimental research platform, which enhances the dialogue between project, theory, art and territory, and promotes a direct and conscious involvement of students in the reading and construction of contemporary space.
