On Thursday 25th July, at 15:00, the Main Hall 'Rita Levi Montalcini' of the Cattinara Hospital will host the lectio magistralis of Prof. Luigi Fontana entitled 'Lifestyle Medicine for Managing Metabolic Disorders in Gastrointestinal Disease: Strategies for Prevention and Treatment'.

The event is promoted by the Specialisation School in Diseases of the Digestive System of the University of Trieste directed by Prof. Saveria Lory Crocè.

Luigi Fontana, scientific director of the Charles Perkins Centre Royal Prince Alfred Clinic at the University of Sydney (Australia), is an internationally recognised physician and scientist, regarded as one of the world's leading experts in the field of nutrition and longevity.

His pioneering studies on the effects of calorie restriction on humans have opened up a new area in the field of nutrition research, which promises great potential in the prevention of chronic diseases related to poor lifestyles and in understanding the biology of ageing.

His research, which has won him prestigious awards – such as the American Federation for Aging Research Award for gerontology, the Glenn Award for research on the biological mechanisms of ageing and the Vincent Cristofalo Award from the American Federation for Aging – focuses on the essential role of a healthy diet and exercise in slowing down the ageing process and preventing many of the most common chronic diseases.

During his talk, Dr. Fontana will emphasise the importance of limiting the health and socio-economic effects of ageing and the spread of chronic diseases associated with poor lifestyles, a new paradigm shift in the debate 'from chronic illness to chronic health' as the only sustainable solution for the future.

The introduction will be given by Dr Fabio Monica, head of the Gastroenterology Department at the local health service (ASUGI).
