After the first event held on 21st June on the Barcola seafront, Sunday 21st September sees the return of the social engagement project organised by the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Health Science (DSM) at the University of Trieste, entitled ‘Health between land and sea’.

The initiative, aimed at the general public, includes educational walks in which UniTS lecturers, ASUGI doctors, rescue professionals, environmental guides and Forestry Corps agents will illustrate key aspects of three fundamental themes for operating with awareness within forest environments. These themes are: health and prevention (wellbeing), health protection (health) and forest rescue (safety). The lecturers and researchers involved include Luigi Murena, Serena Zacchigna, Nicola di Meo, Massimo Puato, Emiliana Giacomello and Katia Rupel.

Those interested in participating should meet at 9:30 at the MIB Trieste School of Management in Largo Caduti di Nassiriya. The initiative will take place in the Parco Farneto. To participate, you must register using the relevant form on the University website. Registration is free of charge. Participants will take turns on three different walks, each lasting about 20-30 minutes, accompanied by experts who will provide insights into wellbeing and health and safety, depending on the route taken.

‘Once again, we will talk about the importance of physical activity, especially in a natural environment such as a forest, as a means of prevention and wellbeing, without forgetting the importance of doing so safely, knowing the environment we are in and discovering the techniques of those involved in rescue,’ emphasises Alex Buoite Stella, DSM delegate for social engagement and project manager.

The ‘Health between land and sea’ project, promoted by the Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences, involves the collaboration of the Municipality of Trieste through the Department of Territorial Policies, the local health authority (ASUGI), the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the Burlo Garofolo Research Hospital, Pallanuoto Trieste Samer & Co. Shipping, Trieste Campus, Triestina Nuoto and the ‘Band of Rescue’ Dog Unit - FIN Italian Swimming Federation Rescue Section.

In particular, the collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste is aimed at promoting the second edition of ‘Health between land and sea’ as part of European Mobility Week (16th-22nd September), which includes a programme designed to reflect and take concrete action on issues concerning quality of life, sustainability and citizens' health.
