Mon, Jul 15 2024, 9am - 1pm Sede evento Aula Magna, edificio D - Piazzale Europa 1 Testo evento On Monday 15th July, in the Main Hall of Building D of Piazzale Europa Campus, starting at 9:00, the University of Trieste will host the final event of the 5G-SITACOR project, which conducted a feasibility study for the implementation of 5G along cross-border sections of the Mediterranean and Baltic-Adriatic TEN-T corridors between Italy and Slovenia. The study was coordinated by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, in collaboration with the University of Trieste, the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), DARS (Slovenia), Telekom Slovenije (Slovenia), Anas (Italy), Autostrade Alto Adriatico (Italy), Retelit (Italy) and Luka Koper (Slovenia) with the aim of assessing and defining the best ways to exploit the potential of 5G technology (higher transmission speed, lower latency and higher reliability) in different areas for the development of linear infrastructures such as Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) and road safety in the identified areas. Over the course of the project, the existing TEN-T road corridors (275 km) in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and western Slovenia (Udine/Ronchis - Luka Koper - Postojna) were analysed, regarding the realisation of safe, reliable and sustainable high-performance infrastructures, including Gigabit and 5G networks. The 6-month study was carried out thanks to a grant of € 342,742 from the European Union. The activities carried out included the assessment of the existing transport and telecommunication infrastructure along the corridor for efficient sharing and reuse (fibre, power supply, utility poles, ground space, etc.), the analysis of the technical and economic sustainability of the investments required for the complete coverage of the corridor, and the possibilities for the development of linear infrastructure related to CAM road safety, as well as the alignment with the EuroQCI objectives for an ultra-safe communication infrastructure. The University of Trieste was particularly involved in the quantum security aspects of communications. The final event of the project, which will also be attended by the Minister for Digital Transformation of the Republic of Slovenia Emilija Stojmenova Duh, aims to present the final results of the study by defining the best ways to apply the potential of 5G network technology to different use cases, such as Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) or improving road safety (Intelligent Traffic System), as well as advanced protection in the transmission of information (Quantum Key Distribution) on motorway sections between Italy and Slovenia.
