On Monday, March 11, 2024, at 8:30 p.m., the event "AI Talks: Scientific Replication and the Life Sciences" will be held at Hangar Teatri, Via Luigi Pecenco 10, Trieste.

The initiative is organised by the Artificial Intelligence Student Society AI2S in collaboration with the University of Trieste.

We will be joined by Leonardo Egidi and Giulio Caravagna from the University of Trieste.

Lost in Replication: A Journey into the Scientific Replication Crisis

We live in an era in which discerning 'good' news from 'bad' news is a rather complex task and in which science and technology travel at breakneck speed. Amidst this almost incomprehensible flow of information, do we ever try to ask ourselves whether the result of a given laboratory, research centre, or institute is verifiable and replicable? Prof. Leonardo Egidi will explore the urgency of addressing the methodological issues that threaten the credibility of science in his presentation ‘Lost in Replication’.

Leonardo Egidi is assistant professor of Statistics at the University of Trieste, Department of Economics, Business, Mathematics and Statistics (DEAMS). He is currently developing Bayesian methods for theoretical and applied statistics, including clinical trial applications and biostatistics.

Artificial Intelligence for Life Sciences

This presentation will explore how artificial intelligence is revolutionising the field of genetics and precision medicine, with a particular focus on how it can help extend human life. Through the use of genetic data and machine learning, we highlight the potential of AI to provide a deeper understanding of how genetics and lifestyle influence health, and how this approach can be crucial in combating complex diseases such as cancer.

Giulio Caravagna is professor of Computer Science at the University of Trieste, where he directs the Cancer Data Science Laboratory. He works on the development of computational tools, in particular for the study of cancer as an evolutionary process.
