As part of the University of Trieste's centenary celebrations, the Department of Life Sciences organized a series of seminars in the biological and psychological fields taught by prominent former students currently in the world of research and entrepreneurship.

The events, which will take place on three separate days, will be open to the public and aimed primarily at staff and students of the Department of Life Sciences. However, considering the importance of the speakers and their exceptional range of skills and experience, the talks are of potential interest to a wider audience, both internal and external to the University.

The first day is scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024 at the Great Hall of Building M on the University grounds, starting at 9 a.m., and will feature speakers:

  • Piero Carninci, head of the Genomics Research Center at the Human Technopole in Milan, Italy, and Team Leader of the Laboratory for Transcriptome Technology at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences, Yokohama, Japan.

Dr. Piero Carninci graduated from the University of Trieste in 1989; during and after graduation he carried out research activities at the CIB National Laboratory in Trieste developing innovative methodologies for DNA extraction and sequencing. In 1995, he moved to Japan at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences, obtaining impressive results in the field of genomics since the early years. In 2008, he became principal investigator at the Omics Science Center at RIKEN, and later division director at the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technologies. He has authored more than 400 scientific publications and received numerous international awards. Since 2020, he has held a dual position as head of the Genomics Research Center at the Human Technopole in Milan, Italy, and as Team Leader of the Laboratory for Transcriptome Technology at the RIKEN Center in Yokohama.

  • Monica Gostissa, scientific director of Egle Therapeutics, Paris, France, a biotechnology company involved in the development of innovative therapies for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Gostissa graduated from the University of Trieste in 1994. She received her Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, doing her research at the CIB National Laboratory in Trieste. After several years as a postdoctoral fellow at LNCIB in Trieste, he continued his postdoctoral research activity at Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. Having acquired a deep understanding of cell biology, oncology and tumor immunology, she then turned to biotechnology companies, where she led preclinical programs aimed at transferring scientific knowledge into innovative anticancer therapies. Prior to her current role at Egle Therapeutics, she was Vice President of Preclinical Sciences at Jounce Therapeutics (Boston, USA) and Director of Tumor Immunology and Imaging at 121 Bio/Agenus (Boston, MA). She has authored more than 40 publications and received numerous awards, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Special Fellow award and the V Foundation Scholar Award.
