Meetings on Public and Social Engagement - Third Mission

for students, teachers, researchers, and technical and administrative staff

On Thursday, 22nd February 2024, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Bruno de Finetti Conference Room (Building D, first floor, Piazzale Europa 1), the event ‘Sustainable development and international openness: the contribution of universities to social and environmental justice’ will take place with Lelio Iapadre, professor of Applied Economics and Deputy Rector for Sustainable Development at the University of L'Aquila.

The University of Trieste is organising an in-depth meeting on Public and Social Commitment - Third Mission, aimed at teaching, research, and technical and administrative staff, all students of the University, as well as external researchers and other organisations that have over time collaborated with the University of Trieste in the same field.

Lelio Iapadre represents the University in the University network for sustainable development (Rete delle università per lo sviluppo sostenibile – RUS) and is a partner in the Forum of Inequalities and Diversities (Forum Disuguaglianze Diversità). Internationally, he is also an Associate Research Fellow at the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) in Bruges and president of the High-Performance Computing for Disaster Resilience Consortium (HPC4DR). His research interests mainly concern the relationship between international openness and sustainable development of local systems.

On 22nd February, Lelio Iapadre will show how the Italian university system can contribute significantly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. ‘The social role of universities is manifested in education and research activities and collaboration with public institutions, social organisations and businesses. These activities,' points out prof. Iapadre, 'must be adapted to different local environments, but the most valuable function that universities can play consists of linking the local foundations of development with the global networks of knowledge dissemination, enhancing the international openness of local systems'. Among the topics of the meeting is the 'Open Territories' project of the University of L'Aquila, an example of sustainable development inspired by ideals of social and environmental justice.

A second in-depth meeting on Public and Social Engagement - Third Mission is scheduled for next Thursday 21st March (3.00 p.m.-6.00 p.m., Bachelet Hall, Central Building, 1st floor). On this occasion taking the floor will be Fulvio Esposito, foreperson of the Forum of Inequalities and Diversities, as well as Francesca Spigarelli, professor of Applied Economics, former Deputy Rector for Third Mission at the University of Macerata.
