From 12th to 14th September 2024, the University of Trieste will host the 2024 Association for the History of the Italian Language (ASLI) conference. This year, the conference is dedicated to the theme ‘Languages, borders, explorations and migrations: A history of language and language contact'.

The event will explore the linguistic contact between Italian and other languages, analysing phenomena of bilingualism, internationalisation, translation and migration.

The conference will be divided into four thematic sections:  Bilingualism and Language Contact will examine the interactions between Italian and other languages; Internationalisation and Translation will examine the spread of Italian throughout the world and the challenges of translation; Migration and Linguistic Dynamics will analyse the impact of migration on languages; Historical and Recent Perspectives will focus on linguistic influences through time.

The event is organised by the Department of Legal, Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies (IUSLIT) and the Department of Humanities (DiSU).

The conference begins on Thursday 12th September at 9:30, in the Main Hall of via Filzi 14 where a formal welcome will be delivered in the morning. The rest of the programme for the first day will take place in the same building.

On Friday 13th September, the conference will move to the DiSU buildings with the parallel sessions to be held in Androna Campo Marzio 10 and the plenary sessions in Androna Baciocchi.

The final day, Saturday 14, will, once again, be hosted in Via Filzi 14.
