Let’s change! Il clima sta cambiando. Parliamone, the Public and Social Engagement – Third Mission project of the Department of Engineering and Architecture at UniTS, continues. The effects of climate change are increasingly tangible in Trieste too. Negative impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems and extreme weather events such as flooding and heatwaves are causing increasingly significant damage to the local area, to infrastructure and facilities of public interest, to economic activities, and to health. From this perspective, sharing scientific knowledge on the ongoing transition and promoting awareness-raising initiatives and mobilizing governments and civil society is increasingly urgent.

On Monday, May 18, 2026, at 5:30 PM, the Urban Center, located at Corso Cavour 2/2, Trieste, will host the second meeting of the project "Let's Change! The Climate is Changing. Let's Talk About It", titled "The Sea Is Advancing: How Can We Get Around the City?".

With an introduction by: Giorgio Fontolan and Elena Marchigiani, University of Trieste

Trieste's waterfront is increasingly exposed to extreme weather and climate events, which, in the near future, could make car and bus traffic difficult and inconsistent. While shifting mobility toward more sustainable and less impactful modes of transport is a key objective for improving air quality, it becomes crucial and urgent to address both how to get around—prioritizing low-impact public transportation by land and sea, walking, and cycling—and where to do so. Why not, then, consider lightening the waterfront, transforming it into a space capable of withstanding and adapting to floodwaters, allowing access and movement within the city along more internal routes, leaving private vehicles in park-and-ride areas from which to continue using alternative modes?

The three meetings in the series "Adapting Trieste to Climate Change. Towards a Participatory Agenda of Possible Actions" are designed as opportunities for collective discussion aimed at identifying concrete proposals to be presented to city institutions by October 2026.

The participatory roundtables are open to anyone interested in sharing positions and solutions to make Trieste a city capable of adapting to ongoing climate change.
