This has been particularly obvious with the advent of Industry 4.0, which has blurred the traditional boundaries between "industrial" and "information" engineering, making it necessary to train professionals who can manage, coordinate, and culturally dominate complex processes and products that integrate mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer, process, telecommunications engineering, among others. Soft skills such as relational, communication and managerial skills are also essential in applying engineering knowledge to any context of knowledge, goods, and services production.As for the industrial focus, the PhD Programme strongly encourages collaboration with corporate bodies also through funded scholarships or reserved positions for corporate employees. The Programme includes and promotes periods of stay of PhD student in companies (under the supervision of a corporate co-supervisor) in order to achieve, as much as possible, the educational paradigm of "learning by doing" as a successful alternative to purely theoretical and abstract preparation. Internationalization is also peculiar. Any company wishing to grow by innovating and developing new technologies and products must be open to the international scene. The PhD Programme encourages international collaborations and exchanges of faculty and PhD students with foreign universities and research institutions, in line with the strategic amis of the University.The training includes a two-year portion of didactics to strengthen linguistic and computer skills, basic scientific and methodological disciplines and organizational aspects of research, including participation in national and international research funding calls and dissemination of research results through publications and patents. In the first year, the focus is typically on studying the state of the art of research in the relevant discipline and defining the main study topic and methodological approach more precisely. General-interest subjects for PhD students are paired with subjects related to the specific orientation chosen by the candidate, addressing any potential gaps presented by the student. In the following years individual topics are developed in greater detail, possibly with a period of stay in internationally relevant corporate and research institutions. During this period, the stay of the PhD student in foreign corporate, academic or research structures is strongly encouraged, in order to to contribute to their research training, linguistic and communication skills development and the establishment of a collaboration network that can support the candidate's work, autonomy, and growth even after completing the doctorate. The training activities offered include also a variety of courses and seminars, primarily taught by members of the faculty and experts of proven qualification (both from industry and university) on transversal and mostly multidisciplinary topics that combine theoretical elements with applicative aspects illustrated through case studies and examples of project implementation of the developed concepts.In addition to internally organized training activities, PhD students are encouraged and, where possible, financially supported to participate in schools, conferences, dissemination initiatives, and international congresses. In such contexts, students are encouraged to present their research results, consolidating their scientific communication and relational skills. The Programme also stimulates communication skills, interaction among PhD students and a sense of belonging to a scientific community by organizing annual presentations of their research works within the course and by facilitating PhD students' participation in dedicated training schools, both nationally and internationally, where they have the opportunity to interact with their peers. Programme objectives The PhD aims to train researchers with in-depth scientific preparation and an applied project culture, capable of autonomously developing innovative knowledge and investigative methodologies and conducting qualified research with technical-scientific and managerial skills in both public and private bodies. It focuses on the disciplinary fields of computer engineering, electronics, telecommunications and bioengineering on one side, and mechanical, naval, energy, and production engineering on the other.A fundamental aim of the Programme is to combine project, applied and managerial skills with scientific research conducted with depth and methodological rigor skills. It is believed that this combination is essential for the subsequent professional valorization of the PhD graduate within any operational context, in roles such as researcher, designer or manager with a high technical-scientific profile.Specifically, the PhD Programme involves a solid applied project culture aimed at putting engineering knowledge and research directly at the service of technological innovation, both in product and process, as a key factor for corporate development and competitiveness, as well as for the efficient production of services in the public administration sector. One of the aims is also to establish direct collaboration between the PhD candidate and the research group in which they operate with industrial, corporate, and academic entities (both nationally and internationally), which may represent a subsequent career opportunity after obtaining the degree. Career opportunities The PhD Programme trains graduates with a solid, methodological and multidisciplinary preparation, enabling them to find employment in a variety of work contexts. In addition to universities and national and international research institutions, particularly important career opportunities exist within public and private companies operating in the industrial sector of goods and services production, especially those aiming to innovate their products and the market. PhD graduates are trained to conceive new technologies, products and professions, contributing to the economic development of the country and Europe's productive system. Examples of career opportunities include all manufacturing companies, companies that operate in the fields of information technology and telecommunications, companies providing logistics services and management consultancy, as well as companies in the biomedical sector. Public administration also represents a significant career path, particularly concerning the applications of informatics in the medical and healthcare sector. The training provided to PhD graduates enables them to find professional placement typically involving research and development activities, as well as advanced design using cutting-edge tools and methods. They may also cover roles oriented towards management, optimization, and planning of production and logistical processes. Additionally, opportunities in freelance professions and entrepreneurial paths should not be overlooked. Experience shows the considerable desirability of graduates from the Programme, also internationally, with important opportunities for successful integration and job placement in foreign productive and academic realities.
