The primary goal is to train motivated and skilled young graduates with a solid qualification, with innovative and independent thinking and a large degree of autonomy. They will be able to achieve high-level scientific and professional goals in industry or in the academic world, both in Italy and abroad. This PhD Programme covers all chemical disciplines and some areas of chemical engineering. Research topics range from classical organic synthesis to nanotechnology, from green and sustainable chemistry to computational chemistry, just to name a few. Students will have the opportunity to join a scientifically rich and stimulating environment, characterized by many national and international collaborations, and to be part of advanced research projects supervised by experienced and motivated scientists. Students will also attend specific courses (in English, upon request) and seminars on peculiar research topics. Training and research projects are periodically updated to promptly follow the evolution of the chemistry frontiers and to improve interaction with the international, national, and local scientific community, in line with the feedback from stakeholders' consultations. Programme objectives The primary goal of PhD training is to acquire skills to conduct high-quality research activities at universities, public institutions or private organizations. For this purpose, PhD students are prepared through steady experimental research activities and appropriate specialized educational paths in order to maximize their ability to self-manage research in a context of international competition. The future chemical researcher must have theoretical and practical tools to address issues and implications related to the development of new chemical products and processes, as well as their application in the academic field, industry and all related production processes and services such as nanotechnologies and advanced materials, cultural heritage preservation, agri-food, biotechnologies and biomedicine. To achieve this, PhD candidates must acquire the ability to work in teams, exchange interdisciplinary skills also through international mobility projects and clearly disseminate research results. The goals of the PhD course in chemistry are continuously monitored and periodically updated in order to ensure full consistency with the University and Department Strategic Plans. Career opportunities The spectrum of employment opportunities for a student with a PhD in Chemistry is quite broad. Firstly, the profession most suitable for the skills and training acquired during the PhD is that of a researcher in public and private institutions where figures capable of independently managing research projects and activities requiring high scientific qualifications are required, usually universities, research centers, and chemical companies where the PhD graduate can work as a researcher, research & development manager, project manager, laboratory manager, production manager or quality control manager. The PhD graduate may also hold positions of scientific-managerial responsibility in other service activities and industrial sectors of advanced technology directly related to chemistry such as special materials and sensor technology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, cultural heritage, and agri-food. Then, the PhD graduate may also be employed in the secondary education sector as a teacher of scientific disciplines in high schools. To ensure extensive and qualified employment and professional opportunities for future graduates, the PhD in Chemistry engages with stakeholders in the local area, maintains contacts nationally and internationally with the chemical scientific community and organizes consultations and meetings with stakeholders. The PhD in Chemistry maintains ongoing contact with alumni and actively involves them in periodic consultations.
