27 March 2026, 6 - 7 pm Testo evento On Friday, March 27, 2026, at 6:00 PM, at the Rogers Station on Riva Grumula, Eric Louis Russell's book, "Nice White Anglophones. Privilege, Power, and Monolingualism", will be presented. The author will be in conversation with Sergia Adamo, professor of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Trieste, Leonardo Buonomo, professor of Anglo-American Literature (UniTS), and writer Laila Waida. This groundbreaking work explores themes of race, power, and ideology through a broad case study told as a narrative, centered on a white, monolingual American family—"the Smiths." The reader is invited to follow the daily lives of this seemingly "normal" family, English-speaking and Caucasian, and to critically reflect on their linguistic and cultural reality, on what they do and, above all, on what they don't do. What role does white monolingualism play in the socioeconomic and political context? How do those who participate in linguistic and cultural processes reinforce dynamics that grant privilege and power to some and exclude others? And how does white monolingualism contribute to narrowing our cultural horizons? These themes will be introduced through stories and explored in depth, addressing the underlying issues in the encounter in an innovative and engaging way.The meeting is organized as part of the agreement between Stazione Rogers and the University of Trieste.Eric Louis Russell is full professor of Italian and French at the University of California. He has been a visiting professor at the Department of Humanities at the University of Trieste. His publications include Alpha Masculinity: Hegemony in Language and Discourse (2021) and Fighting Words! A Critical Approach to Linguistic Transgression (2024).
