Open Access (OA) is a publication practice that allows anyone to read the products of scientific research (books, articles, etc.) free of charge. By implementing it, the University contributes to the dissemination of research results to a wider audience and thus to the growth of knowledge.

To support Open Access, the University has adopted the University Policy on Open Access to Scientific Literature.

Gold and green

These are the two main types of Open Access publishing:

  • Gold Open Access: consists of publishing OA articles directly in the journal. This means that the article can be downloaded free of charge by anyone, but authors must pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to have it published.
  • Green Open Access: consists of the publication of a closed access article in the journal and its republication with open access in an institutional repository. The republication must be in a different form from that in the journal, i.e:
    • the post-print or article accepted manuscript: the version accepted for publication by the journal, but without the final formatting
    • the pre-print: the version submitted to the journal for publication, but not yet peer-reviewed.

For the University, the reference repository for the implementation of Green Open Access is ArTS (Trieste Research Archive).

Transformative contracts

These are contracts set up at national level between CRUI and some publishers to allow authors to publish free of charge in Gold Open Access without paying an APC.

The list of transformative contracts in which the University is involved can be found on the University Library System website
