On Thursday, December 19, from 1:00 PM, a roundtable discussion titled "Syria 2024. Genesis of a Regime Change" will take place in Classroom A of Building A, at the Piazzale Europa Campus, organized by the Asia, Africa, and the Middle East Observatory - CASIP Mario Stoppino of the Department of Political and Social Sciences (DiSPeS) at the University of Trieste.

The initiative aims to analyze the dynamics that led to the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the implications for Syria, and the prospects for the entire regional context.

On December 8, 2024, armed rebels captured Damascus, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to leave Syria. This event marks the end of the Assad family regime, in power since 1970, and a turning point in the civil war that has been ongoing for over 13 years.

The discussion will include the participation of:

  • Silvia Carenzi, PhD candidate at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, expert on Syria and non-state armed groups;
  • Valeria Talbot, head of the MENA area at ISPI in Milan;
  • Federico Donelli, Professor of International Relations, University of Trieste.

Moderator: Sara Cosatti, PhD Student, UniTS.

The event, open to students, staff of the University of Trieste, and the general public, aims to foster a critical and informed debate on a topic of great relevance for understanding contemporary geopolitical balances, focusing on the complex dynamics of the Syrian regime change and its impact on the region and beyond.
