Penumbra can be defined as a transition zone between light and shadow. It therefore indicates a liminal area in which many events can occur. They may not be clear or well-defined, yet they foreshadow unforeseen processes. The penumbra is therefore that space, physical and imaginary, where anything is possible: it is the place of the uncanny, where presence or absence can produce wonder or horror.

The issue of Architectural Design edited by Agostino De Rosa, Alessio Bortot and Francesco Bergamo sets out to address the presence of this archetype in the world of contemporary creativity, investigating the ways in which it permeates different forms of expression, ranging from critical theory to architectural drawing, from design and planning to photography, and from set design to art. It explores how today’s creativity reflects the dramatic but electrifying historical period in which we find ourselves.
