On Monday 19 February 2024, at 11:15 a.m., in Classroom B of the Department of Humanities, Androna Campo Marzio 10, Trieste, the ‘One Hundred Years of Zeno’ project kicks off with the first in a series of seminars entitled ‘What is Zeno's problem? And do I have a problem?’.

Speakers: Magda Indiveri and Teo Verdiani, with the participation of student-actors from the University of Trieste and Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreters.

Following the centenary celebrations of the publication of Zeno’s Conscience (La coscienza di Zeno), the project ‘One Hundred Years of Zeno’ has two key aims:

- To develop comprehension skills, critical interpretation and critical questioning of texts in high school students in order to respond to the challenges faced in modern life. Given the themes of the book, this is with particular reference to addiction and intrapersonal relationships between peers and parents, operating outside the more traditional themes often found in school reading. The meetings are based around passages from Zeno’s Conscience, such as a passage on his smoking addiction. Students will be involved in a shared reflection under the guidance of experts in the prevention and combating of addiction in collaboration with ALT, an association of citizens and family members in Trieste for the prevention and fight against addiction. The readings will be interpreted in Italian sign language (LIS) by professionals, who will also explain the basics of the language and the barriers to inclusion faced by deaf people.

- To enhance the work and renown of Italo Svevo by using new communication strategies to involve the local community and by paying particular attention to the inclusion of people with disabilities. The multidisciplinary dialogues between experts in the field will be accompanied by expressive readings taken from the novel and performed by university students, post-doctoral fellows and young researchers from all departments at the University of Trieste.
